The Ateneo de Manila University confirmed today, March 6, the death of Father Joaquin Bernas, SJ, a Bicolano from Baao, Camarines Sur.

Father Bernas is a Jesuit, priest, constitutionalIst, lawyer and law professor, bar topnotcher, prolific author and columnist, academic leader, Church leader as Jesuit Provincial, and anti-dictatorship fighter being one of the convenors who chose Cory Aquino to lead the opposition against Marcos in the 1986 elections. Bernas was president of the Ateneo de Manila University from 1984 to 1993, and served as Dean of the Ateneo Law School twice. Upon his retirement in 2004, he was conferred the position of Dean Emeritus.
Father Bernas, who obtained his law degree at Ateneo in 1962 and ranked 9th in the Bar Examination that year, was a member of the Constitutional Commission that drafted the 1987 Constitution.
Father Bernas was 88.
