The Municipality of Irosin, Sorsogon through its Mayor, Alfredo “Pidoy” Cielo, Jr., denounced the Russian invasion of Ukraine calling the act as a “path paved by megalomaniac and an apparently strong man towards a war of irreversible and lasting horrible consequences”.

In an open statement posted on Facebook and other social media pages of the LGU of Irosin, Mayor Pidoy also appealed to every democratic and freedom-loving people around the world to rise with one voice and concrete actions to stop the use of power by stronger entities over the weak and vulnerable. He also offered Irosin as a possible shelter for Ukrainians fleeing the war.

Russia, being considered as a military superpower, invaded Ukraine last February 24, 2022 at 3:00 AM, UTC. According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, he had ordered “a special military operation” based on the claim that Ukrainian society “was faced with the rise of far-right nationalism, which rapidly developed into aggressive Russophobia and neo-Nazism“.

Mayor Pidoy also offered Irosin, no matter how far, to be an area for shelter for refugees if needed.
