Is the Camarines Sur 2019 Congressional election following a plot in the Game of Thrones?
The Andaya Clan has fielded Marissa Andaya and Maribel Andaya-Eusebio under the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC) banner in the First and Second Districts, respectively. Marissa will replace the third-termer Nonoy while Maribel is challenging Luis Raymund Villafuerte. Luis was the one who had beaten Datu Arroyo, the son of former President and Speaker of the House, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, in the 2016 Congressional race.
The Villafuerte Clan, meanwhile, is aiming to extend its territory by fielding Ernesto Villafuerte Magtuto Jr. under the Nacionalista Party (NP) in the Partido area. Magtubo is contending the seat with Arnulf Bryan Fuentebella (NPC)
Father and son Luis and Luis Raymund will both run in the Second and Third Congressional Districts, respectively. The elder Luis challenges incumbent Congressman Gabby Bordado who is under the Liberal Party (LP) wing.
Cho Roco, the brother of the late statesman Raul Roco, is also challenging Bordado and is running under Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban).
In Rinconada, the open season brought about by the last term of Sal Fortuo is giving a breath of fresh air to the Alfelor Clan. Peachy Alfelor-Moraleda (NPC) is aiming to reclaim the District. She will be competing with the wife of incumbent Congressman Sal Fortuno who has changed her nickname from “Josie” to “Josal” to attract the incumbent’s supporters.

The murder of Ako Bicol Congressman and Daraga, Albay mayoralty candidate, Rodel Batocabe, puts Albay in a hotspot. Observers and voters alike are asking what will happen next now that Batocabe is gone and how come the municipality has come to this.
Prior to the death of Batocabe, the mayoralty race was seen as three-cornered with Batocabe under the National Unity Party (NUP) banner, current Mayor Carlwyn Baldo under Lakas Christian-Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD), and Victor Perete of Partido Demokratiko Pilipino – Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban). The odds were with Batocabe especially with the support of Ako Bicol who has links with House Speaker and former President Gloria Arroyo.
With Batocabe gone, the tables turned and instead became messy. Baldo was tagged as a suspect in the murder and slapped with two counts of murder and six frustated murder cases. Baldo, however, claimed innocence stating that he is being used as a scapegoat leaving the real culprit untouched.
Except for the Alfelors of Rinconada, the politicians in Camarines Sur filed their certificates of candidacy for the posts they were initially eyeing. This is true at least at the provincial level. The original discussions was for Peachy Alfelor to run as Vice Governor of Nonoy Andaya while Madel Gazmen will elevate herself to the Congressional seat representing the 5th District.
Because of internal dynamics in the Alfelor Clan, Provincial Board member Russel Banes had to step in. Hence, Andaya, who claims to be supported by former President and current Speaker of the House Gloria Arroyo, has Banes as running mate while reelectionist Migz Villafuerte has Imelda Papin. Competing with them is Bishop Buenaflor of the Pederalismo ng Dugong DakilangSamahan (PDDS).
The filing of candidacies for the 2019 elections revealed a few surprises in the Province of Albay. This is because of the events at the national level that necessitated some realignments at the local level. It should be noted that the 2019 election is a midterm election and will test the public’s support for the Duterte Administration.
Among the surprises is the lack of contenders for mayoralty post in at least six towns with two or three more having only token candidates. Another is the assumed return of Cong. Joey Salceda to the provincial government. This is his ticket to the Regional Governorship should Federalism pushes through. Instead, Salceda sought re-election as Representative for the Second Congressional District.
The electoral lineup for the 2019 elections in the province of Albay is as follows:
The 2019 gubernatorial elections in Camarines Norte is a rematch between incumbent Governor Edgardo Tallado and former Congresswoman Catherine Barcelona Reyes. In 2016, after battling sex scandal that caught national attention, Tallado edged out Reyes with a 2.3% vote-margin or around 5,000 votes. Will the rematch lead to Tallado’s re-election?
The full list of candidates for the provincial posts of Camarines Norte are as follows:
BALMEO, Romeo (Independent or Ind)
REYES, Catherine Barcelona (Liberal Party or LP)
TALLADO, Edgardo (Partido Demkratikong Pilipino – Laban ng Bayan or PDP-Laban)
