Camarines Sur is the gross domestic product (GDP) boss of Bicol. But here’s the catch: Kung boss sa GDP ang CamSur, tauno ta dakul pa giraray an pobre sa nasabing probinsiya? As of 2023, CamSur is third highest in terms of poverty incidence among families with 22.4%.
Pero ano ang GDP?
GDP, or Gross Domestic Product, is the total value of all goods and services produced in a place in one year. It includes things like: farm production, construction projects, business sales, services like transport, retail, tourism, education, and banking among others. In simple terms, it measures how big an economy is.

But GDP does not automatically mean people are rich. It only shows how much the economy produces—not how income is shared.
The 2024 provincial GDP estimates show:
- Camarines Sur — ~₱210.8B
- Albay — ₱162.17B
- Masbate — ~₱85.6B
- Sorsogon — ₱83.90B
- Camarines Norte — ₱64.93B
- Catanduanes — ₱32.63B
This means that among the provinces in the Bicol Region, CamSur has the largest economy.
Unfortunately, higher GDP doesn’t always mean less poverty. Hence, your CamSur Paradox. But why doesn’t higher GDP doesn’t automatically mean lesser poverty?
1. GDP is the province’s income, not your family’s income. GDP counts big economic activity like construction, trade, and government spending. But that doesn’t guarantee higher wages or stable jobs.
2. CamSur has two realities. Cities and major towns benefit more from services and business activity, while many rural communities still rely on farming, fishing, or seasonal work.
3. Some industries grow GDP faster than incomes. Sectors like construction, finance, and trade can increase GDP quickly—but they don’t always spread income widely. Lalo na kung ang construction mo kadaklan ghost projects lang. So aram mo na saen minaduman an kuwarta.
CamSur may be the GDP boss, but the real test is whether growth improves everyday life. Because for ordinary families, the real scoreboard is simple:
May trabaho kaya?
May income?
Nabawasan an pagtios?
Until those improve, many will keep saying:
“Dakul su GDP… pero tauno ta dae man minaginhawa an kadaklan?”
