NAGA CITY, Philippines — Thirteen-year-old Nagueña tennis player Maristella Torrecampo delivered a standout performance on the international stage after securing back-to-back championships in the U14 Girls Singles category of the ITF Asia 14 & Under Development Championships 2026 (South, Southeast and East Asia – Week 2) held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

Torrecampo, currently ranked No. 1 seed in the Philippines for her age group, dominated Singapore’s Zixi Wang in the final match, winning in straight sets, 6–1, 6–1. The decisive victory capped a strong tournament run and highlighted the young athlete’s growing presence in Asian junior tennis.

A resident of Pacol, Naga City, Torrecampo studies at the American School for English, Math and Sciences. She comes from a tennis-centered household—her parents manage the canteen at the Naga City Tennis Court in the Civic Center, where her father, Delfin Torrecampo, also serves as a coach. Her early and constant exposure to the sport has helped shape her competitive development.

Her recent international success has drawn attention from the local sports community and fueled optimism that she could follow the path of Filipina tennis star Alex Eala, who has become a global inspiration for young Filipino players.

Local supporters and coaches view Torrecampo’s achievement as a significant milestone not only for Naga City but also for Philippine tennis, underscoring the potential of grassroots-developed athletes to compete successfully at the regional level.

With her continued training and international exposure, Torrecampo is expected to participate in more regional and global junior tournaments as she builds toward higher levels of competition.
