The Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI), in partnership with DOST-Bicol, DOST V- Provincial S&T Office – Catanduanes, and Catanduanes State University (CatSU), recently conducted a KatHABI Textile Innovation Fashion Show as part of the 2024 Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (RSTW) and Abacanobasyon 2.0 in the Bicol Region on May 22, 2024.

As one of the largest producers of abaca in the country, Catanduanes showcased its rich heritage through innovative textile designs. One of the highlights of the fashion show was the streetwear collection made by the CatSU Garments, Fashion, and Design students, featuring innovative designs using polyabaca and polypiña abaca developed by DOST-PTRI.

The fashion show also featured the latest innovations in textiles and apparel using Philippine Tropical Fabrics (PTFs) developed through DOST-PTRI technologies, showcasing collections from Albert Andrada Luxewear, Hiraya Lizan, Nina Inabel, JC Buendia, Unica Hija by BAYO, and the Davao Fashion Design Council Foundation, Inc.

Furthermore, Ditta Sandico’s latest Banaca collection, celebrating her 40th year in the sustainable fashion industry, was also showcased, featuring pieces that are handwoven and dyed by local artisans and transformed into easy-to-wear garments perfect for the modern Filipina.
