(Updated, August 5). One of the prestigious sports events is the Palarong Pambansa. It is where the 17 regional athletic associations in the country compete in various sports events.
After a three year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Palarong Pambansa is back again. As of August 5, the event is dominated by the National Capital Region (NCR) with 85 gold medals, 74 silver medals and 55 bronze medals or a total of 214. NCR is followed by the Western Visayas followed by the Southern Tagalog Region (Region 4-A).

Bicol Region, meanwhile, ranked 10th with 13 golds, 15 silver and 22 bronze medals. So, who are these uragons who dominated their respective sporting events and won the gold?
Bianca G. Gebilagiun, Javelin Throw, Secondary Girls Division. Gebilagiun is a Masbateña who secured the first gold for the Bicol region in the Javelin Throw event.
Rose Jane Barcelona, Long Jump event. Barcelona is an 11-year old student from Mario G. Guariña Elementary School, Juban, Sorsogon. She dominated the long jump elementary girls division with an impressive 4.59 meters jump.
Ericson Noleal, Arnis Competition. Noleal is a Grade 11 student from Ligao National High School, Ligao City , Albay. He secured the gold medal in Arnis Individual – Espada Y Daga. His coach is Marie Kathleen Quililan.

Albert Jose Amaro II, Butterfly Swimming Event. Amaro is the 4th gold hauler by winning the 50m butterfly swimming event and setting an impressive new record of 26.14 seconds, surpassing the previous 2018 record of 26.34 seconds. His Coach is Ruperto Badong.

Meleizza R. Monteroso, Ashly Evon Q. Dela Torre, and Rockquel Juliene E. Rellorcasa, Synchronized Single Weapon (Arnis), and synchronized Espada y Daga (Sword and Dagger). The athletes secured two gold medals — one for the Synchornized Single Weapon, and another for Synchronized Espada y Daga both for the Elementary Girls Category. The team is from SDO Ligao City.

Justine Trixiane A. Quililan, Justine Gianne A. Quililan, and Joanne Marie G. Lopez, Synchronized Single Weapon (Arnis). The athletes secured a gold medal for the Secondary Girls Category.

Sofia G. Huete, Discus Throw. Huete, from Sta. Cruz Elementary School in Sorsogon, achieved an impressive distance of 29.98 meters, securing the top spot in the competition. Her success is also attributed to the guidance and support provided by her coaches, Melvin M. Balaoro and Lory M. Ravanilla.

Courtney Jewel M. Trangia, Discus Throw. Trangia, a 16-year-old athlete from Balud, Masbate, has secured a gold medal by achieving an impressive record of 35.66 meters in the Discus Throw event. The talented athlete was under the guidance of coaches Regine B. Librando and Jonathan G. Librando.

Rica Rile, 1500-meter run. Rile, a 12 year-old Grade 6 student from San Pedro Elementary School in Panganiban, Camarines Norte, led the 1500m run finals – elementary girls category. She was trained by Servano Ilaw and coached by Melvin M. Balaoro and Lory M. Ravanilla.

Jan Jose Alaon, 1500-meter run. Alaon made a stunning victory in the 1500m run for elementary boys, securing a gold medal for Bicol region. His coaches, Arnel Morales and Antonio Chavez, played a significant role in his success.

Beatrize Maria Mabalay, 200-meter Breaststroke. Mabalay, from Bulan National High School, won a gold medal in the 200m Breaststroke. She also won two silver medals in the 50m Breaststroke for the secondary girls category at the Palarong Pambansa.

The Bicol Vulcans, meanwhile, remain undefeated for the most coveted trophy of character – the Cleanest and Greenest Billeting School in 2023 Palarong Pambansa!
