Ombudsman suspends Catanduanes Governor

The Deputy Ombudsman for Luzon issued a preventive suspension against Catanduanes Governor, Joseph Cua, for abuse of authority, conduct prejudicial to the best interest of service, dishonesty and grave misconduct. The suspension order has been served last Friday, January 11, 2019, by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Regional Office No. 5.

The suspension order stemmed from the complaint filed against Cua and Bato Mayor Eulogio Rodriguez. Allegedly, Cua allowed the construction company of Rodriguez, the ER Construction, the use of a provincial government lot for free and without any  authorization from the Sangguniang Panlalawigan.

The Ombudsman, however, denied the prayer of Rey Mendez, the complainant of the case, for preventive suspension against Roriguez.

Both Cua and Rodriguez are seeking reelection in the provincial government and Bato, respectively, under the Unite Nationalist Alliance (UNA).

2019 Elections: Bato, Catanduanes Candidates

The mayoralty race in Bato, Catanduanes is a rematch between Eulogio Rodriguez and Johnny Rodulfo. In 2016, the two had an electoral duel with Rodriguez emerging as winner with barely 1,000 vote-margin. Rodriguez is running under the Unitd Nationalist Alliance (UNA) while Rodulfo is under the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban).

The vice mayoralty race is also a rematch between Roy Regalado (PDP-Laban) and Roberto Rodulfo (UNA). This time, however, there will be no other contenders unlike in 2016 when they were four. Regalado won the 2016 vice mayoralty race while Rodulfo ranked third. Has Rodulfo came prepared this time?

Twenty-one also filed certificates of candidacies for the seats in the Sangguniang Bayan. The list is dominated by UNA and PDP-Laban candidates. One is running under Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP) while the rest are independent.
